main \ projects \ make five \    [14 images]

about ten months ago, i started a project to reconstruct an photograph with vector objects.
the idea started forming after i saw 'take five' by Karen*

actually, i had seen that image and a few days later, i was sketching with graphite,
just doodling around, and i ended up making this

and that's when the idea of vectors came to mind. here's my first attempt (some graphics were used)

here's a copy that i like. it's really simple, but i like that about it

progression points, for those that are interested

it's only about thirteen objects, so it's a very minor part of the piece,
but it's a very familiar thing to most people, so i thought it would be nice to show
the steps i took to create the bulldozer to illustrate a little of the detail.

here's a view of the interface i used to create this

and finally, the final version

basic process of creation: a vector graphic is an object defined by points
connected with lines. i would select a colour from the original image, create
a rectangle or square vector graphic in that single colour, then add points to
it and shape it into whatever i was reproducing. as you can easily see from
the comparison of the original image and the final version, there were thousands
of objects used. i saved off several hundred frames of progress and made
them into an animation. it's pretty cool to watch it happen.
